As George W. might say, Grant Robertson is doing a "a heck of a job" as media writer for the Globe and Mail. Today's column on the lockout and strike at Quebecor's Journal de Quebec in Quebec City is another example of media news you won't see in Sun Media.
Grant's column says the 120 editorial and office employees who were locked out Sunday and the 80 press workers who followed in a supportive strike have launched a 24-page newspaper of their own called Media Matin.
"A 24-page version of the free tabloid-size newspaper Media Matin hit the streets of Quebec City yesterday and was vying for reader attention with Le Journal, which Quebecor has continued to publish since the dispute began on Sunday," Grant writes.
The Media Matin press run yesterday was 40,000.
Grant notes it is deja vu all over again for the Peladeaus because the late Pierre Peladeau launched his successful Journal newspapers in Quebec City and Montreal during newspaper strikes at Montreal's La Presse and Quebec City's Le Soleil.
Media Matin gives Quebec City newspaper readers who want to support the locked out and striking workers a newspaper other than the Journal, which is still publishing daily.
The 24-page Media Matin reminds us of a paper published by Vancouver Sun and Province editorial employees during a prolonged strike in the early 1970s.
The professional offshoot Vancouver newspaper, paid for by the union, gave newspaper readers a source for news and it showed management it could be done.
Pierre Karl Peladeau should see the irony of Media Martin being published four decades after his father benefitted from the same scenario.
