The lockout and strike at Sun Media's Journal de Quebec is approaching the four-month mark, with little positive news coming from either side in the dispute.
The 252 editorial, pressroom and office employees have been publishing a free CUPE-supported daily MediaMatin tabloid since the lockout and strike began in Quebec City on April 22.
Quebecor has been publishing the Journal de Quebec without interruption.
Apparently out of frustration, CUPE has posted an update of its position, with a calendar of events from the fall of 2006 to late July.
The latest update from July 17 reads:
"The Métallos (FTQ) union lends $700,000 to the Journal employees involved in the conflict. This is added to some $200,000 collected in the past few weeks.
“We’re in a position to hold on. The employer will not be able to wear us down. So the smartest move would be to resume negotiations,” states Denis Bolduc, president of the journalists’ union.
No new CUPE dateline entries or action from either side since July 17.
The lengthy lockout/strike is the only current labour dispute at Sun Media. The Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild landed new contracts for the London Free Press, Ottawa Sun and Simcoe Reformer earlier this year.
