ReplyDeleteIt's hard to describe how embarrassed a journalist with any pride feels working for this company. That front page is an insult to every employee with a functioning brain.
ReplyDeleteIt's the Sun's equivalent of throwing a childish temper tantrum. Quite juvenile.
ReplyDeleteAnyone catch the Sun's full-page feature following the plane tragedy in Russia that took the lives of all those great hockey players? Too many spelling errors to count. Another day, another brutal job.
ReplyDeleteAnd what would you have put on the front? Maybe the National Post's McGuinty wins a majority? Or a picture of McGuinty? Or Hudak? Or Horwath? Listen, I'm no fan of the place anymore either but no one with a functioning brain takes that kind of front literally and it is the only front ANYONE is talking about or took any notice of today — and don't say it was for the wrong reasons. Getting people to notice is what the front page of a tabloid is all about. Sounds like they did their job.

ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the effect Sun headlines have on me as I walk by them and unfortunately read the headlines. So negative! So downright hostile, amateurish and non-constructive!
ReplyDeleteJust angers me...a pleasant walk interrupted.
And the blight of many empty and forgotten rusting out Sun boxes left on city streets.

@12:39am. How about having some pride and class. Oh wait, it's the Sun. You can say this for Sun Media, you always know where the bottom of the barrel is.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you drank the Sun cool aide a long time ago. I'm so proud to say I don't work there anymore and that I left on my terms.
12:39 - I think the goal of a cover is to get people to BUY the paper. Yes that cover garnered attention, but only because it had Torontonians posting a photo of it online to laugh at the company. And quite frankly, they have every right to laugh.
ReplyDeleteThis cover is the kind of childishness that PKP is forcing on the employees and it's embarrassing to admit to working for the company now when the only thing people remember are covers like this.
The only people being negative are those commenting on this site. Absolutely no sense of humour just embittered about a business that changed much more quickly than you did. You may pine for the old days all you want but they are long gone and they were no more classy than they are today and journalists have no less pride. They just work harder doing multimedia. Most people I spoke with took it as tongue in cheek. Only the embittered took it otherwise. I hope they continue to give us something to talk about and I hope the rest of you can come to grips with it but if you can't, the Star is always there to cure your insomnia.

To 11:21 p.m.: I love how commenters like this one echo what has come to be the Sun's (and by Sun I mean SNN as well as the papers) new "either/or" ethos. Some of us are proud of the work we do at the Sun, and quite comfortable with the changes in the industry, but still find that cover to be a complete humiliation.
ReplyDeleteThe "pining for the old days" is primarily the wish for the higher staff levels of yesterday, which would better enable the paper to give us, as it always has in the past, something to talk about, but without the factual errors, spelling mistakes and atrocious grammar that's becoming more and more the norm. It isn't the lazy commenter's choice of "either the Sun or the Star," but rather a better Sun.

ReplyDeleteApparently Sun Media is distributing "playbooks" (not the BlackBerry tablet) which is telling its community newspaper reporters how to write more like tabloids and add your own slanted views on topics.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that will go over really well in some of the smaller communities.
