Killer Sun fronts

All five Sun tabloids went with the same photo and "The Devil Himself" front page Tuesday.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, the national story being killer tabloid fare.

Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg jumped all over the story and kudos to all involved.

And it has only just begun.

  1. Interesting, though: I was watching one of the TV pieces, and it was set in a restaurant, with the obligatory Sun being opened and "read" by the patron.

Is it correct, style-wise, to call this guy a "soldier"? I mean, he is an airman, and I don't think you can use the terms interchangeably.

And don't get me started on using "The HMCS...."

  2. They all went with the front because they were all mandated to go with that... .freedom to choose and design the front is slowly slipping away.

  3. Sorry, but nobody was mandated to go with that front. It is made available as a shared page like many fronts on major stories. Individual markets can opt for to use them. This will be true for the Olympic front produced Friday for Saturday papers.

  4. Well if they can opt to use them, funny not one paper decided to go with something different and be original...it's not that great of a front or photo, there were better photos posted that could have been used for the front.

Another case of drinking the kool-aid?

  5. Yes, they jumped all over it, after their over-downsized, understaffed, under-resourced local papers broke the story.

  6. If you can't see how great that front was you shouldn't be in news. It was sparked by a reporter getting a great story. We should be celebrating that, not complaining. That single story won the day, and it may be the best story in a long time.

Yes, the local paper got swallowed up in the chain but no decent reporter allows themselves to get beaten in the biggest story of their careers.

  7. All five Suns used the same "Bernardo's Pal" front on Friday. We'd like to think the sameness for the second time this week was the result of choice because it was another tab front winner. A Sun "gotcha" thanks to a team effort.

  8. I'm not questioning the story (certainly front worth), but I'm questioning everyone using the same front design. Why have graphic artists, layout editors if one person is going to design a front for everyone?

    Where's the originality?

Oh wait, this is PKP's papers, that word doesn't exist, my bad.
