QMI drops PCQ

Quebecor has dropped out of the Press Council of Quebec in an apparent dispute over its dealings with two of its newspapers, says the Montreal Gazette.

The Gazette says Sun Media's Journal de Montreal, currently involved in a 17-month lockout, and the Journal de Quebec, which ended a 16-month lockout/strike last year, "cited a lack of vision and a desire to limit freedom of the press on the part of the council."

A letter addressed to Guy Amyot, Secretary General of the press council, Charles Michaud of Sun Media Corporation cited their dissatisfaction with the council as the reason for their withdrawal, says the Gazette.

The Toronto Sun and other Sun Media newspapers in Ontario are members of the Ontario Press Council.

  1. Typical Peladeau petulance. Why would they want to be associated with or allow themselves to be judged by organizations that contain real journalists?

  2. Maybe Peladeau will start up his own press council now?

  3. Nothing this company does surprises me anymore and further embarrasses me to be associated with them.

  4. Actually, it's press councils everywhere that should be dumping them. This company is an embarrassing cancer on this industry.

  5. Baffling decision. The purpose of PCs is to resolve disputes without going to court. By pulling out of the voluntary dispute resolution process, the papers leave people with no other option but to sue for redress of whatever grievance they have. If nothing else, it’s a shortsighted move that will cost them a fortune in legal fees and settlements.

  6. PK prefers that kind of confrontation. Cooperation and compromise are not in his lexicon. He's a fist-pounding, elbows-up kind of guy so, sure, see ya in court!

  7. Maybe the Peladeaus have a bet going with the Aspers as to who can ruin their daddy's company the fastest?

  8. Le Journal de Montreal was kicked out of Quebec's National Assembly press gallery a few days ago. Apparently, the press gallery has some silly rule about not letting in newspapers that are in the midst of a labour dispute.

Toronto Sun ran it front page with a misleading headline. The story has absolutely no significance in Toronto. Hence the misleading headline to stir up some interest.

    Story only is here:

Rather ironic that Sun Media suddenly takes its spin onto the high road for this one.
