New Falls ME

Stephen Gallagher, a 15-year print media vet and former Brantford Expositor city editor, is the new managing editor at the Niagara Falls Review.

A QMI story says Gallagher, 38, attended Ryerson before interning at the Edmonton Journal. He spent two years as a Medicine Hat News reporter; six years at the Sault Star (three as district editor); six years at the St. Catharines Standard (four years as news editor); and then moved to the Expositor as city editor earlier this year.

"I'm excited to join an experienced, professional newsroom staff and continuing to build on a great print and online product," Gallagher says in the QMI story.

"We're absolutely thrilled to have Steve," said Mark Cressman, publisher at the Review. "I firmly believe this is the best newsroom in Ontario. Adding Steve is that final piece of the puzzle. He's a young guy. He's a go getter. He's from Niagara so he understands the market. We're excited to have him on board."

Sounds like the man for the job. Let's hope newsroom stability and longevity are in the cards.

Sun Media staff cutbacks and troop movements down Brantford, St. Catharines, Niagara and Welland way in the past year or so have been dizzying.

  1. Good for Steven. His spouse is still a better journalist, but she's pretty good that's no slight on him.

  2. Does anyone know where the former editor, Peter Conradi, has gone to? Some place better that Quebecor hopefully

  3. Peter Conradi, along with former publisher Dave Martineau, now work for Bob Gale — http://www.gales.ca/ — of Gales Gas Bars, the most robbed gas stations in Niagara.
They are not pumping gas, but working for Gale in other areas.

  4. So, let's see. Through various firings, defections to the start-up weekly and people moving on for better opportunities, Brantford has had to replace over the last two years or so the positions of: publisher, managing editor, advertising director, circulation manager, a couple of ad reps and city editor (twice in seven months). Hope the new building has a revolving door.

  5. This is actually sad news for the team at the Expositor. Lucky Niagara Falls Review.

  6. Good luck, Stephen.

You didn't deserve to be buried in that pit.

  7. I don't think anybody at The Brantford Expositor deserves to work in "that pit," AngryAndie. And you can say the same for any employee of QMI from Welland to North Bay.

Sorry, I stand corrected - apart from Mr. Walsh.

While I understand most of the changes have been caused by PKP's New World Order, I've never met anyone in Osprey's former empire that seems so delighted to offer up dirty new ways to slash and burn the region's newsrooms.

Just for jollies, I recently took a trip to my local library and picked out an archived Saturday newspaper from two years ago, then compare it to the current weekend edition.
It's disgraceful how much less the reader gets for their money these days. There's nary a decent local article in any of the week's editions that didn't ship out of Barrie or Woodstock, and they're filled with typos and enormous, lazy 90-point headlines.

There is no creativity, no originality, no local writers and nothing of interest for local readers.

I've decided this is my last year with Quebecor. After the news I received this week, I'm more ashamed of where I work than ever before, and I'm tired of making up excuses for why this dishonorable company continues to insult its readers and employees.
