Runners-up in the 2008 National Newspaper Awards will receive a framed certificate - but no cash, the NNA says on its website.
In previous years, runners-up received $250. NNA winners will see the cash prize reduced to $1,000, from $1,500.
Scott White, NNA board chair, says the board made the decision because revenue and sponsorship for the gala awards presentation in Montreal on May 22 is running below budget.

"The savings on the prize money will allow the gala event to continue, meaning both winners and runners-up will still be celebrated by their colleagues and peers," says Scott.
NNA nominations are expected to be announced soon.
