The Owen Sound Sun Times, another former Osprey Media newspaper, says four employees were among the 600 cut by Sun Media yesterday.
They include two of the 15 people in the newsroom
The paper said publisher Cheryl McMenemy will consider a variety of “staff reduction scenarios” over the “next couple of weeks.”
It says the four-person layoff does not include mailroom workers whose staff levels fluctuate depending on business volume.
These are the first newsroom layoffs in McMenemy’s seven years as Sun Times publisher.
“To be able to accomplish this and not lower our expectations in the local news we’re going to deliver . . . there really has to be an exercise in reviewing how we do certain things,” she said. “At the end of the day we want this to have the least impact on our readers as possible.”
Some of the staff reductions might be accomplished through early retirement by senior employees, the paper said.
