The Welland Tribune's staff cuts total eight across all departments at the paper, which has operations in Welland, Port Colborne and Pelham.
“Downsizing is never a pleasant thing to do,” said Paul McCuaig, senior group publisher of the Sun Media Niagara Publishing Group, which includes the Tribune, the Niagara Falls Review and the Standard in St. Catharines.
“But we have to realize that the economy is affecting all of us and from time to time adjustments need to be made,” McCuaig said in the Tribune story.
Tribune publisher Ken Koyama said the newspaper is still committed to serving its community and “being the newspaper of record” for south Niagara.
“It’s been a difficult day for us but we are retaining our sense of purpose and desire to serve our communities,” said Koyama.
Bob Tymczyszyn, unit chair of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union Local 87-M, which represents employees in the Standard’s editorial department, said, “Many in the editorial department are shocked by the staff cuts announced today."
