Peterborugh -11

Updated 18/12/08
The Peterborough Examiner's online story is short and does not mention the casualties, but a TSF reader says 11 employees are gone.

The tipster says two reporters, two copy editors, a "very tearful" long-time newsroom secretary, three circulation department workers and about three in pre-press were axed.

James Neeley, reporter;

Laura Mueller, reporter;

Bill Hodgins, editor;

Kennedy Gordon, editor.

Other names would be appreciated.

  1. We weren't given final numbers but it's more than 11.
    Morale is horrible, but we are soldering on.

    We lost two very talented reporters: James Neeley – who had developed strong contacts and loved to chase big stories – and Laura Mueller – a new journalist who only started in the fall and showed great promise.

    We lost two very talented editors, who were not only great designers but also mentors and our friends: Bill Hodgins and Kennedy Gordon.

    We really miss them and the paper won't be the same.

  2. I also work at The Examiner and am so disheartened to see good friends and co-workers lose their jobs.

    In a time where Sun Media is pushing for more web-based product, we lose two editors who are very tech/web savvy while several longtime editors nearing retirement remain (guess Sun Media didn't want to fork out severance packages). Many of us are still scratching our heads on the decisions.

    James and Laura are two very strong, dedicated reporters and it's a loss to the newsroom and our readers. I hope they get back on their feet soon.

    As well, there is talk The Examiner is going to be cutting back on the number of pages early in the new year, meaning less space for local content.

    This week our newsroom has been in a zombie-like state... morale is at a low and I expect it will be like that for some time.
